Clark County NV Redistricting - Communities of Interest Considerations
On October 4, Clark County Nevada held its first Redistricting public input meeting. A few members of the public, including community activists, attended. Considerations when mapping Clark County districts: - According to the 2020 Decennial Census, the population of Clark County was 2,265,461. - The County is divided into seven County Commission Districts. - Each District would have an ‘ideal’ population of 323,637. - Districts can’t have more than a 10% variance in population from each other. - Clark County Commissioners have a goal of not more than a 2% population variance between districts.
During the public input meeting, some of the discussion included making attempts to: - Create a majority Black district - Create at least two majority Hispanic districts - Keep most, or all, of Spring Valley Township within one district
I created a map of three districts that attempt to address the above items: - District 1, 2 and 3 would each have a majority Hispanic population. - District 2 would have the highest possible Black population in the county, 26%. - District 3 is drawn to avoid most of Spring Valley Township except for a small noncontiguous section just north of the main body.
